22-year-old Jane Chika Oranika is a Nigerian American rapper who is bent on bringing back what is missing in the music industry.
The young rapper became a viral sensation when she recently called out the enigmatic hip hop artiste, Kanye West, in a freestyle marvel, sampling his Jesus Walks beat. She has a huge support from popular figures like Erykah Badu, Sean “Diddy” Combs and Jada Pinkett Smith.
In an interview with The Time, she said she has loved music, adding that the passion to achieve that feat has been pushing her to post more videos of her works online
Again, in her recent YouTube video, No Squares, Chika explores the meaning of friendships and how they are significant to her life and her nascent career. She told Time that though she has been giving rap music due attention in about two years, she started writing poetry, the very basic of rap, when she was at the tender age of 11.
Reacting to the viral comeback at Kanye, she said it was deserved because the artiste spat directly into the faces of those who helped his career. She added that she was annoyed with the attitude. Chika also said that she had to do what she did with the freestyle because she is coming into the same industry that the artiste is in, and she had to do her “due diligence”. The rapper said the best way to hit Kanye was to do so through his own music.
She added in her interview that she wants to use her music as an aide to emotion processing, saying she wants to “bring back what is real and let people be more in touch with themselves”. Chika said she is through her music bringing back what is missing in the industry, adding that rap chose her and not the other way round.
