The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have publicized that Egypt will host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Egypt won the hosting rights to this prestigious football competition after CAF officials voted on Tuesday, January 8 in Dakar Senegal.
The poll for the hosting rights of AFCON 2019 was keenly contested by Egypt and South Africa but the North African country came out victorious, and has gotten the rights.
CAF had to come up with a new host for AFCON 2019 after stripping Cameroon of the hosting rights due to their inability to upgrade their infrastructures to the level required to handle a 24-team tournament. Also, CAF had concerns about the political instability in the country.
Recall that Egypt has hosted four African Cup of nations tournaments; 1957, 1974, 1986 and 2006. All the times they’ve hosted the tournament, they ended up winning the title, except for 1974.
